Benešov nad Ploučnicí lies on the Ploučnice, southeast of Děčín. The town was first mentioned in 1311 and received town rights in 1392.

The Upper Chateau, built in 1522–1524, stands on the north side of Míru Square. The Lower Chateau was built between 1540 and 1544. The town also has the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and a Marian Column dating from 1745.
